Gabriela MonteroConcert PianistMontero, a Venezuelan pianist, gave her first public performance at the age of five. Montero recently recorded and performed at Barack Obama's presidential inauguration on January 20, 2009. Montero is also celebrated for her piano improvisations, and for taking requests from audiences for melodies on which she can then improvise. In her interview on All Things Considered, she says that when she was two or three, she began improvising on lullabies that her mother sang to her. On her CD Bach & Beyond released in 2006, she improvises on Bach themes. She has also been profiled on the television program 60 Minutes (December 3, 2006). |
CB BurnsideProfessional Skateboarder & SnowboarderCB Burnside started skateboarding at the age of 10. Every day, she would practice her tricks for six to seven hours! Throughout the years, she has won two X Games gold medals, five Vans Triple Crown titles and four All Girls Skate Jam titles. CB has also been named Transworld Magazine's Female Skateboarder of the Year. CB Burnside opened up the door for a lot of female extreme athletes. She has earned various endorsement deals with companies such as Vans, Hurley and Independent. CB was also the first female skater to have her own signature shoe. But more importantly than shoe deals, CB proved that girls can comptete in sports that were once thought of as too extreme and dangerous for them. |
Mimi KnoopProfessional SkateboarderMimi has performed well in her 4 X Games appearances, earning bronze in 2004 & 2005 and silver in 2006. Her dad is also no stranger to bronze -- he just earned the bronze star for serving in Iraq. Mimi learned to skate tranny while living in Cuba and is now a hard charging bowl skater living in Virginia. Mimi is also long time friends with CB Burnside. |
Nancy Swiderpeltz Jr.![]() Olympic Speed SkaterIt's not easy to be a four-time Olympian's daughter and to fill her mother’s shoes — or in this case, her skates. But that is exactly what Nancy Swider-Peltz, Jr. of Wheaton, IL, is doing these days. Swider-Peltz, Jr., 22, captured the 3,000 and the 5,000 meters and took second in the 1,500 meters at the U.S. Long Track Speedskating Championships held at the Pettit National Ice Center in West Allis, Wis., Dec. 27-28, 2008, en route to being named the women’s U.S. Allround Champion. |
Epke ZonderlandOlympic GymnastEpke Jan Zonderland, born April 16, 1986 in Lemmer, Netherlands, is a Dutch gymnast. Zonderland started exercising gymnastics at the age of four. He reached his first international success as a junior in 2004. At the European Junior Championships in Ljubljana he became fourth at the all-around event and he won a silver medal at the horizontal bar. That same year he also became Dutch national all-around champion by taking over the title from his older brother Herre. In 2005 at the World Championships in Melbourne, Zonderland became one the first ever Dutch gymnasts in the history of the sport to qualify for the all-around final. He eventually ended up on the 11th position. |
